West Coast's poor recent form continued with an upset two-point loss to the Hawks at the WACA. The Eagles held what appeared to be a comfortable lead at quarter time but Hawthorn fought their way into the game, and hit the front approaching the final siren before a stunning smother by Michael Collica on Phil Read sealed the win. Chad Morrison had 29 possessions and Ben Cousins picked up 26.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"At quarter-time, the Hawks trailed by 31 points. Judge summoned John Barker from the bench to quell Andrew Donnelly, reshuffled his midfield, rotated his small forwards on David Wirrpunda, shifted Michael Collica on to Mitchell White and demanded that the Hawks drop back in numbers to congest the defensive area.

With the Eagles' forward line crowded, Cummings could no longer find space to lead to and turnovers were plentiful. The momentum was now with the Hawks, who trailed by only two points at three-quarter-time after Aaron Lord kicked his third.

The Eagles increased their lead by 10 points early in the final quarter and were looking comfortable again - but the Hawks refused to yield.

Kris Barlow converted from an uncontested mark 20 metres out and when a Wirrpunda pass failed to hit Cousins - allowing Tony Woods to score - Hawthorn got its nose in front for the first time in the game."[1]
