West Coast dominated the first half against the Dees, holding their opponents to a single goal and opening up a 43 point lead, but took their foot off the pedal late in the match to miss out on valuable percentage. Fraser Gehrig kicked five goals for the second straight week, and young ruckman Michael Gardiner booted three.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"Malthouse would have been furious at the casual attitude of his Eagles, who wasted a chance to boost their percentage with uninspired and inconsistent football.
It was not until after Melbourne's Andrew Obst was reported at the 14-minute mark of the final term - for allegedly striking Peter Sumich - that the Eagles finally fired up.
Sumich's resultant shot from 50 metres hit the left-hand goal post, the fifth poster for the night, but after Fraser Gehrig kicked his fifth major, Ilija Grgic his second and Brett Heady his first.
Melbourne's midfielders and forwards had most of the play during the second half - but they failed to use it properly, whereas West Coast played in productive bursts."[1]
