From the papers[]

The Age[]

"After half-time the Eagles coasted, stepping up a notch only when required and teasing Melbourene in the process to such an extent that the Demons' skill level deteriorated even further.

Apart from the fact that the Eagles now have a decent sniff of Richmond's tentative hold on fourth place - and a Perth final - the positive aspect of victory was the return of Chris Mainwaring.

The veteran wingman, playing his first game since dislocating his shoulder in the fourth round, collected the best part of 20 possessions before running out of puff in the final quarter of the game.

The Demons struggle to beat teams placed above them at the best of times, but rarely when spearhead Garry Lyon is well held, as he was by Mitchell White."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Skipper John Worsfold, David Hynes and the promising Fraser Gehrig combined for six goals between them in the first term as the Eagles strode to a 35 point lead at the first change.

From then on Melbourne battled gamely to get back into the match and at one stage got to within 14 points in the third term.

However, turnovers cost them dearly and none was worse than Andy Lovell's poor kick to Brett Lovett in the last term which was intercepted by Peter Matera who then sealed the game with a great right foot snap.

Matera was just one of many dominant Eagle midfielders with Dean Kemp and Chris Waterman also winning plenty of the ball and using it with the precision their Demon counterparts could only envy."[2]
