From the papers[]
The Sunday Age[]
"How it stopped the Eagles winning was with several sustained individual performances against West Coast's best players. Rayden Tallis rarely let centreman Dean Kemp out of his sights, but was confident enough to step out when there was the chance to create play.
Tallis kicked two goals, and had Kemp moved to a forward pocket briefly in the third quarter.
Shane Crawford won an equally comprehensive victory on his wing against Peter Matera, getting twice the amount of ball and using it more efficiently than on recent outings. And while centre half-forward Jason Taylor was quiet, he kept the Eagles' star defender Glen Jakovich busy, moving him out of the play and clearing the path to goal.
The Hawks also exploited the area where most opposition still feel they have a chance against West Coast. With Langford on top of centre half-forward Ashley McIntosh, and Mark Graham in control of full- forward Peter Sumich, the goalkicking duties fell to the Eagles' smaller forwards such as Chris Lewis and Shane Bond, a duty they were unable to perform."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Although they outscored Hawthorn when kicking with a strong wind in the second and fourth quarters, the Eagles failed to make headway into it.
But Hawthorn made full use of the conditions, Paul Hudson proving an able substitute for Dunstall by kicking five goals, and stand-in full-forward Alex McDonald making his presence felt by kicking three goals.
It was only during a 20-minute lapse by the Hawks in the second quarter that West Coast seemed likely to get into the game.
After opening the term with a goal from rover Ben Allan, its only major for the term, Hawthorn did not score again until the 24th minute when Andrew Gowers kicked a point."[2]
