From the papers[]

The Age[]

"It was the Eagles' play during the latter half of the second term which turned the game around and made it obvious they would return west with a victory.

In eight straight minutes against the strong Moorabbin wind, West Coast scored five goals, taking them from six points down to 25 points up at half-time.

And, although St Kilda mounted a spirited last-ditch attack in the final minutes of the game to move within nine points, the final result never really looked in doubt.

The most impressive player, both in size and performance, for the day was undoubtedly West Coast ruckman Laurie Keene. Keene controlled the centre bounces and was unrivalled in his marking strength. He picked up an impressive 21 kicks, 15 marks and seven handballs."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"When Chris Mainwaring snapped a goal at the 24-minute mark of the final term it seemed the result was set but St Kilda whipped into attack for a flurry of goals and was within nine points at the 28-minute mark.

The Saints' belated burst came far too late in the day and although the Eagles looked jittery in the final few minutes they were able to hold on.

The much publicised Moorabbin ground was in excellent condition and confounded the sceptics who expected it to be a quagmire."[2]
