In a thrilling shootout to start the season, West Coast trailed by 34 points in the first quarter and then led by 20 in the third quarter. Both sides had their chances but the Eagles were better at converting theirs, with a five-goal haul to Phil Matera and mighty efforts from Ben Cousins and Chris Judd in the midfield lifting them over the line.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"Cousins, who was already one of the candidates for best on ground, clinched the honour in this burst, either clearing the ball from the centre square or setting up the clearance on each occasion. He was the link-man between Ashley Sampi and Daniel Chick once, then twice set Sampi free as Chris Judd scored his fifth goal and Damien Adkins got another.
Still the Dogs were not done. Jade Rawlings had started his first game for his new club with four goals from his first four kicks. Then things started to go awry, six subsequent scoring shots yielding 2.4. Now, however, a shot from just outside 50 was shepherded through by Luke Darcy for his seventh goal and when the unlikely Peter Street marked and converted from 45 metres out, on the opposite flank, the Bulldogs were suddenly back within two points.
Still the Bulldogs came forward and Luke Darcy stuck out a foot as he could not get to a ground-level ball. To his horror, the rebound went to Chad Morrison, who got the ball to Sampi and a run and long kick later and the Eagles had gone from the prospect of being a straight kick behind to eight points in front."
