The reigning premiers trailed by 33 points in the third term but fought back, and the lead see-sawed through the last quarter before a Paul Salmon goal gave Essendon a three-point win. Peter Sumich kicked five goals and David Hart led all players with 31 possessions.

From the papers[]
The Sunday Age[]
"It really was difficult to work out how the Eagles lost the match. After surviving an opening in which Essendon dominated play, but booted a wasteful 2.6, West Coast turned the game into a gruelling Indian arm wrestle, one it always appeared to control. The Eagles' stingy backline was even meaner than usual, typified by the performance of David Hart, who not only shut Essendon livewire Darren Bewick completely out of the picture, but became a prime source of drive himself with 31 possessions.
Glen Jakovich wasted little time getting on top of key Bomber forwards James Hird and Glenn Manton, and for a while Jakovich and Hart were complemented by an Eagles midfield that had returned to its 1992 vintage. Peter Matera streaked along the members' wing a la that season's grand final, and Dean Kemp bobbed and weaved around the centre square for a cool 31 possessions.
Topping it off was a hungry-looking Peter Sumich, who managed to thread through a couple of goals from near the boundary line, and miss a couple from far easier positions for a day's tally of 5.4."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"After a tight first half, West Coast raced almost six goals clear halfway through the third quarter before an unanswered six-goal Essendon run.
The lead then changed four times in the final quarter before Salmon, who had contributed just one point, marked in the goal square in the 29th minute of the final term.
The Bombers had some top players in Cockatoo-Collins, with 21 possessions and three goals from half-forward, midfielders Mark Mercuri and Gary O'Donnell and Doolan at half back."[2]
