From the papers[]

The Age[]

"That the Eagles were ever in a position to lose was their own fault. They led virtually all day and dominated the first 10 minutes of the final quarter, but only managed one goal from 10 scoring shots.

They were then made to pay. When, after 10 minutes, Essendon finally managed to mount a serious attack, the mercuria;l Darren Bewick was held without the ball and promptly converted the seventh of his eight goals for the day. Three minutes later he roved a goal-square scrimmage and goaled again; the Bombers were back in the game.

West Coats held sway for the next 10 minutes, maintaining a four-goal buffer, before Essendon mounted another charge. Goals to Todd Ridley, Stephen Alessio and Mark Mercuri whittled the margin to just two points, and with the Eagles seemingly cramping all over the ground, it seemed the Bombers might sneak home.[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The West Coast Eagles were unsteady and inaccurate in their first game of the season.

Led by rover Darren Bewick with eight goals, the Dons drew within three points of a tiring West Coast at the 24-minute mark of the last quarter before goals to Chris Lewis and Don Pyke sealed the Eagles win.

The Eagles threatened to run away from Essendon during the first and last quarters, but inaccuracy in front of goals nearly cost them dearly as the Dons charged home.

The chief offender was spearhead Peter Sumich, who tarnished a seven-goal performance by kicking nine points."[2]
