From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The Bombers had to survive a typically spirited last quarter revival from West Coast after opening up a 34-point lead midway through the term. The Eagles then booted four straight goals to get within 10 points of the visitors, but the Bombers, clearly fatigued by the warm conditions, held on grimly.
The issue was finally settled with three minutes remaining when ruckman Simon Madden marked a short pass from Darwin recruit Michael Long and kicked truly from 40 metres out.
It was a game effort by Essendon, which might well have dropped its bundle when West Coast opened at a furious pace in the first 10 minutes, kicking the first five goals of the match and opening a 32-point lead. The visitors could easily have sat back and waited for the return bout at Windy Hill. To their credit, they did not.[1]
