West Coast got their sophomore season off to a promising start with a hard-fought win over the Cats in Geelong. The Eagles led at every change and shrugged off Geelong's challenge in the final term to run out 21 point winners. Michael O'Connell kicked five goals and Alex Ishchenko tallied 11 marks and 13 hitouts.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"West Coast led by five points at the end of the first half, but it was in the third quarter where its strength began showing. Alex Ishchenko had been subdued in the first half by Flanagan, but as Geelong's big man began to tire (Damian Bourke was obviously out of touch and played little part in the match), Ishchenko took over. Dropping back a kick behind the play, he proved to be a remarkable thorn to Geelong's half-forward line.
When Geelong did move the ball forward, it struggled to find any space in which to move. Bruce Lindner took a couple of very strong marks - including one in the third quarter from a long torpedo from the centre of the ground by Gary Ablett - and chipped in for five goals, but apart from that, inaccuracy and failing to cover the Eagle defence on the kick out let it down."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Geelong had no answer to the Eagles' dominant big men, Alex Ishchenko, Phil Scott, Mark Zanotti and skipper Ross Glendinning, and capitulated under their aerial supremacy.
Glendinning was the focal point at full forward and although inaccurate with 2.8 he paved the way for the Eagles to grow and helped turn a 10-point last quarter deficit into a winning margin.
The Cats had few winners around the ground but Robert Scott, Mark Bairstow, Gary Ablett, Darren Flanigan and Bairy Stoneham could not be faulted in their determination to try to lift their struggling teammates."[2]
