West Coast suffered another loss, their 16th in a row, this time to Carlton in Melbourne. Once again the Eagles started terribly, giving up nine unanswered goals in the first quarter and trailing by a massive 82 points at the main break as another historic thrashing looked on the cards. West Coast fought back in the second half and were able to piece some passages of play together, narrowing the margin to 71 at the close. Andrew Gaff looked to have put his poor form behind him with 30 possessions and a goal, and Alex Witherden also had 30 touches.

From the coach[]

From the papers[]

The Sunday Times[]

"The game was over at quarter time when Carlton led by 57 points. But the Blues couldn't have kicked nine goals in the first quarter if they hadn't controlled the midfield. The centre clearances were 7-1.

The overall clearances was 18-8. The contested possessions were 41-21 and that led to a 20-4 advantage with inside 50s.

Forget about the fact the Eagles were without Tom Barrass and Jeremy McGovern. No defenders could have withstood that barrage. Adam Simpson would have been horrified."[1]

The Age[]

"Like in round seven, when the Blues tore the Eagles to shreds by 108 points, it was Curnow who inflicted maximum damage, slotting 10 goals for the first time in his career.

The haul made him the first Blue to notch a double-figure tally in a game since STephen Kernahan in 1995, and stretched his lead at the top of the Coleman Medal count.

Four of his goals came in the first term before the Eagles swung key forward Oscar Allen into the backline after quarter-time. But the Blues' weight of inside-50s couldn't be stopped and Curnow - without his sidekick Harry McKay - cashed in."[2]

Reserves[]

Round 15 (22 July)

West Coast's long wait for a win continued, suffering a heartbreaking loss to Swan Districts at Bassendean. The Eagles led late in the game, but a late goal stole the points for the home side. Greg Clark put his hand up for a senior recall with 37 possessions and five tackles, while Jordyn Baker had possibly his best game to date with 21 touches and a goal.
