West Coast continued to lurch towards the finish line of a horror season with an underwhelming home loss to St Kilda. The Eagles' effort was impressive in patches but their ball movement was far from fluid, with the Saints finding the path to goal much easier. Jack Redden tallied 25 disposals and eight tackles and Bailey Williams impressed in a lead ruck role.

Quarter by quarter[]

Both sides went in as named. The match was played in fine conditions but a series of exhibition English Premier League matches earlier in the weekend left the ground in poor condition.

From the coach[]

"Yeah, the year has been frustrating, but the glass is half full. I think some of the things we’ve been doing since the bye we’ve been more consistent, but we haven’t had quite the reward. Obviously, the Essendon game was, but a few quarters are letting us down, I feel like we are getting more consistent as we go but we are not getting the results. I think we had 20 inside 50s for two goals in the third quarter. The first half we hung in there, I think there was a minute and a half to go and we conceded a couple of goals. There was three points in it then they kicked the last two goals before half time, but the numbers suggested they should have been further in front. The second half we thought was better than the first half.

"...I thought some of our senior players were down, in particular in the first half with our mids, and so many younger players helped carry the load so that is a positive. One thing we will get from this year is some exposure so even Bailey Williams who has been thrown a lot this year – he held his own to a certain degree, I think we had nine clearances but that doesn’t preclude them from making mistakes, learning, and costing us goals here and there. I thought a lot of our young guys have taken a step forward.

"...We didn’t lose the game because of the surface, but I thought they did a great job getting the ground that way. The rain was heavy and had been all week, it was fantastic considering what they’ve gone through, so I think they did a good job and it was going to slippery. The problem we probably have was one side of the ground was quite dry and the other was a bit boggy but that’s okay when both teams had to deal with it. So, I didn’t think it had any influence on the game or if there were a few goals that probably weren’t there."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"For heroic Eagles defender Tom Barrass, it was a case of winning a war but losing a battle that played a big part in the result. He held sway in a big duel with Max King and had 26 disposals with eight marks. But a critical one-on-one win in the final term gave King his second goal despite being well beaten most of the match.

It handed the nervous Saints three goals of breathing space and cracked West Coast’s resolve. That was enough to lift St Kilda back into ninth place on the ladder and keep them in touch with the eight.

In a game played on a surface that was a bit like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates – you didn’t really know what you were going to get with each step - West Coast fans got a glimpse of the future with a strong effort from Jai Culley in the midfield and another dashing game from Jamaine Jones off half back, complementing Barrass’s strong game in defence.

The Eagles got good service from their makeshift ruck duo of Bailey Williams and Josh Rotham. Williams was scratchy at the start but got stronger as the game went on. Rotham, who has struggled to nail down a berth this year, kicked his first two goals in AFL football and competed strongly when taking his turn on the ball."[2]

The Age[]

"Kelly, who was in doubt for the match following a cork to his quad last week, struggled to get going against a hard tag from Marcus Windhager.

The tempo rose in the third quarter as the home side threatened to hit the lead courtesy of two quick goals to Darling.

But with their finals hopes on the line, St Kilda managed to settle.

King out-wrestled Barrass to kick the crucial opening goal of the final quarter, and Butler claimed his fourth and fifth goals to kill off the contest."[3]

Reserves[]

Round 14 (23 July)

West Coast were handed a lesson by premiership hopefuls West Perth. Under lights and in poor weather, the Falcons held West Coast goalless until early in the final term to finish comfortable 57-point winners. Jackson Nelson had a team-high 27 disposals and Greg Clark had 20 touches and nine tackles.
