West Coast started sluggishly as the Crows kicked four straight goals almost before the Eagles had touched the ball. They snapped out of their trance midway through the first quarter and by quarter time had all but leveled the scores. From there it was a high-paced shootout, with the sides exchanging the lead several times. Adelaide led by a slender margin at the final change but were overrun in the last quarter, with acting captain Josh Kennedy kicking three of his side's six goals as the Eagles charged to a surprise 31-point win in their first outing at Adelaide Oval. Kennedy finished with five goals for the match and Andrew Gaff had perhaps his best game for the club with 31 possessions and three goals.

From the coach[]

"I think they just got the jump on us. We were very concerned in the box but we just didn't get the ball. It was hard to establish any patterns other than that they were up and about. They've done it before. A number of times this year they have started like that. I won't say there was no panic in the box, but once we got our first entry into 50 and a shot at goal - I think we kicked a point - but then it sort of went from there. It was disappointing to start like that, especially interstate. But obviously we fought back well.

"...We've been working on moving it a little bit quicker. The main message today was just be brave and play on the edge. We've been working a lot on just the basic fundamentals. I've been talking for a number of weeks about that. Sticking your head over the ball, being cleaner, all that sort of stuff. It worked for us today. Albeit, Adelaide had a six-day break and losing Talia, you could tell in the last quarter that it hurt them.

"...I was really pleased with our ball movement but also disappointed. It was a really high-scoring game. That's not how we want to play, in terms of how we defend. So when teams get run and overlap, it's hard to stop. Once we got momentum we delivered on the scoreboard. Our forwards got pretty good use today."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Adelaide led by two points at three-quarter time, but West Coast dominated the final term with six goals to one.

Gaff kicked his third goal early in the quarter and he finished the game with 31 disposals and eight inside 50s. Then Kennedy kicked two quick goals to break the game open.

Adelaide couldn't keep up and again it was West Coast's ability to get loose and hit targets inside 50 that proved vital.

Once Hurn got loose and ran clear from James Podsiadly while bouncing the ball, it was clear the Eagles had the game won."[2]

The Age[]

"The win was manufactured by so many but few worked harder and more effectively than Andrew Gaff. His midfield creation was most impressive, also thanks to a lot of support from teammates.

Among the Eagles' long list of good players was Matt Priddis, who was mainly opposed to Scott Thompson. Well, they were supposed to be alongside each other. They each gathered 31 disposals but their defensive measures left much to be desired.

However, the Eagles could afford for Priddis to run free because they had others to shut down Adelaide’s prime movers, or at least reduce their impact on the game.

As Simpson said post-match, he asked his players to be brave and play on the edge. They did just that and were duly rewarded."[3]
