Melbourne inflicted a rare Subiaco defeat on West Coast with a thrilling win to push the Eagles to the brink of the top eight. West Coast burst out of the blocks with rookie Quinten Lynch goaling in the first few seconds, and held a sizeable lead at the first change but a seven-goal second term by the Dees saw them go into half-time with a handy break. The home side had regained the lead by the final change but Melbourne, through David Neitz, kicked clear before some late West Coast goals put them within striking distance. The Demons were able to hold on to the final bell and take a valuable six-point win. Lynch finished with five goals and Chris Judd added three from 18 possessions.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Inspirational Melbourne captain David Neitz has again risen to the occasion, kicking three matchwinning goals in the final quarter against West Coast at Subiaco.

Held to only six disposals and one goal for the first three quarters yesterday, the 27-year-old had five possessions, three marks and kicked 3.1 in the last quarter to lift Melbourne to a six-point victory.

His first goal for the term - a snap after a Peter Vardy handball - put Melbourne back in front after the Eagles had broken away to a two-goal lead. But it was his two goals in time-on that stamped his mark on the match.

Pitted in a test of strength in the forward pocket with Ashley McIntosh, Neitz held a tremendous one-handed mark while falling backwards. He calmly went back, opened up the angle and gave Melbourne an 11-point advantage."[1]
