From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Fitzroy had first use of the gale towards the Barkly Street end, but was outscored by four goals to one. West Coast's second term was relatively quiet: the Eagles kicked three goals to two as the wind started to abate, which gave the Lions some sniff of an upset.

But they were foolish thoughts. The wind switched from down the ground to towards the Doug Hawkins wing, the rain settled in for the duration of the afternoon and Fitzroy rarely threatened to trouble the goal umpires again.

What had Shaw shaking his head afterwards was the precise way West Coast handled the conditions. There was none of that fancy possession game: it was a one-touch, kick-long-at-all-costs style of football that left the Lions in awe. The dominance started in the middle, where Dean Kemp had the better of Brad Boyd, and Don Pyke likewise over Jim Wynd, despite the number of times Wynd touched the ball.

It was this match-up that typified the day. While Wynd tried to bring his teammates into the match with a combination of shortpasses and ineffectual chips, Pyke simply threw the ball on to his boot and kicked long."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles seized control in the opening quarter with four goals against the wind to Fitzroy's one and surged 26 points clear by half-time.

They added six goals after half-time while the Lions failed to score in the third term and kicked only two points in the final period.

For much of the game, Eagles such as centre half-back Glen Jakovich, winger Peter Matera and forward pocket Chris Lewis handled the ball as they would on a dry day.

Jakovich ensured opponent John McCarthy had little effect on the game."[2]
