From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The Cats lost by 19 points after looking to be some chance of getting back into this contest halfway through the last quarter. A victory would have been a triumph for persistence in the face of every conceivable football sin.

It would have been an injustice to the Eagles, and perhaps Geelong's hopes for 1992 if they had stolen it.

Even so, it's difficult to work out how much this victory was due to the successful coverage of the top Cats such as Bairstow, G.Hocking, Scott (three touches between them to half-time), by Kemp, Pyke and Lamb respectively, and the failure or simple inability of any of their teammates to step into the breach.

Initially they were set back on their heels by the ferocity and pressure of an opposition from whom less was expected - bearing in mind that the Eagles went under to St Kilda by 11 goals six days earlier."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The key to the Eagles win, which keeps them in fourth place on the ladder and promotes Collingwood to the top, was to control the mid-field after shutting down most of Geelong's on-ball prime movers.

Dean Kemp, Craig Turley, Dwayne Lamb, Don Pyke, Chris Mainwaring and Peter Matera were all major influences for West Coast across mid-field, closing down their opponents.

Their efforts during the term paved the way for full-forward Peter Sumich to kick his three goals for the game and set the tone for the match.

Although Geelong outscored West Coast 10.3 to 8.4 over the course of the last three quarters, the damage had been done and the Cats never fully recovered."[2]
