West Coast came within a couple of kicks of what would have been a remarkable final-quarter comeback but fell just short of North to all but rule the new side out of finals contention. The visitors led by 11 goals late in the third term but Chris Lewis sparked a revival that saw the Eagles kick eight final quarter goals. Lewis finished with five goals and Laurie Keene had 34 hitouts and nine marks.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"North had a healthy buffer zone of 58 points at three-quarter time, and the cheering from the parochial crowd when the Eagles kicked the first three goals of the final term seemed nothing more than misplaced optimism.
But the Eagles, desperate to win to stay in touch with the competition leaders, justified their fans' faith when they staged a spirited recovery and almost carried off one of the season's more extraordinary victories.
Led by the mercurial Chris Lewis, who booted four goals in the first 16 minutes of the final term, West Coast fought to within 11 points of North Melbourne at the start of time-one and had the crowd roaring with anticipation.
This seemed to startle the Kangaroos into realising the gravity of the situation and they fought desperately enough during the last five minutes to resist the frenzied momentum of the home side."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Until the remarkable revival the Eagles looked but a shadow of the side which beat Hawthorn last week to be serious finals contender.
After an even first term, North took charge with four goals in the first ten minutes of the second term.
The visitors were more disciplined and professional as their forwards opened up easy avenues for goal.
The Eagles, on the other hand, struggled every time they went forward as Ian Fairley took his old captain, Glendenning, out of the game."[2]
