In a dour thriller of a Western Derby, four straight West Coast goals either side of three-quarter time gave the Eagles a 22 point lead midway through the last term. Fremantle whittled away at that lead, and a controversial deliberate out-of-bounds call gave Hayden Ballantyne a chance to win the game after the siren. The pint-sized Docker hit the post and West Coast escaped with a 1-point win. Dean Cox dominated in the absence of Aaron Sandilands to win the Glendinning Medal.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"The Dockers booted two goals to one in the opening quarter but were soon on the backfoot as West Coast made their charge, with goals from Matt Priddis and Kennedy handing the ascendancy to the Eagles.

But a 50m penalty against Naitanui gifted a goal to Clarke late in the second quarter, halting the Eagles' momentum in its tracks.

West Coast missed a glut of opportunities in front of goal in the second half and the misses almost came back to haunt them, only for Ballantyne's long-range goal attempt to hit the post."[2]

Herald-Sun[]

"Eagles midfielder Matt Rosa was penalised by umpire Dean Margetts in a highly controversial deliberate out of bounds decision with West Coast leading by two points in the dying seconds.

Ballantyne shot after the siren from 50m out on a tight angle and his drop punt looked a goal for much of its journey before hitting the padding on the right hand goalpost amid a sea of hands from both sides.

Several Dockers, including Ballantyne, were celebrating victory amid chaotic scenes having thought it was a goal."[3]
