West Coast returned to the winners' list but were less than impressive in doing so, squandering numerous chances against the lowly Hawks. The Eagles had to overcome a comprehensive Hawthorn flood and their own rusty skills to post an eight-goal win. Dean Cox dominated Hawks opponent Peter Everitt and Ben Cousins continued his march to the Brownlow with 29 touches and a goal.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Without key targets Hansen and Gardiner, West Coast opted to play around the Subiaco Oval flanks more often than not in an ugly 48-point win and selectors will be tempted to rush in both players.

The Eagles will also look closely at star defender David Wirrpunda, who spent nearly half the game on the bench through illness and a sore calf.

They will also be sweating on a tribunal appearance for livewire small forward Ashley Sampi, who was reported for rough conduct against Jordan Lewis in the third quarter.

Worsfold said he had instructed his players to turn the other cheek when given rough treatment and was disappointed with Sampi's reaction."[1]
