From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The Eagles launched many of their first-quarter attacks from half-back and while they wasted a few possessions going forward, they used the ball well enough to kick four goals.

One player to use the ball well was maligned forward Fraser Gehrig. Given the license to run on a centre wing, Gehrig had it all over Joe McLaren in the first term and was an integral part of several of West Coast's attacking moved.

Watson swung Loewe back to centre-half-forward for the second quarter but it didn't solve the problem in the forward line and left a hole in defence.

Glen Jakovich was waiting for Loewe when he went forward and stopped the strong-marking Saint from exerting a major influence on the game. Loewe's absence at the other end left space for Andrew Donnelly and Phil Matera to move around and both players cashed in to kick two goals each for the quarter."[1]
