From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The onslaught was led by Nicky Winmar, who resumed his position in the midfield after a stint at half-back, and celebrated with a blinding, 37-possession performance. This was a day when even the chosen ones were required to help on the shop floor, and Winmar's work rate was sensational.
He kicked the goal of the day, a 45-metre snap with a heavy ball, and he was involved inthe day's best passage, a volley of St Kilda handballs on the members wing in the final quarter, clearing Tim Pekin for an excellent squaring kick to Winmar, and a delightful left-foot pass to Tony Lockett on the lead for another goal.
Around the middle, where St Kilda tends to struggle, he and Robert Harvey (37 possessions) provided the impetus. West Coast got hardly anything in that area, with Chris Mainwaring shadowed by Jayson Daniels, Peter Matera by Tim Pekin, and Chris Lewis quiet. Harvey blitzed Dean Kemp early, and West Coast was forced into using Craig Turley as a stoppper, to little effect."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The fourth-placed Eagles applied steady pressure in the first quarter during which both teams were restricted to one goal apiece before the Saints kicked six to one in the second term.
St Kilda had control before heavy rain at half-time made conditions extremely sloppy, resulting in the standard of play to drop off alarmingly.
The Eagles were all at sea in the wet with St Kilda adding five goals in the third quarter, while the visitors could manage only four points.
St Kilda's Nicky Winmar snared 37 possessions, neutralising early opponent Craig Turley, and winger Robert Harvey was almost as good with the same number of touches."[2]
