West Coast's lengthy losing streak continued, beaten comfortably by the finals-bound Lions at the Gabba. Brisbane banged through seven goals in the first term before the Eagles had scored, and continued to extend their lead at every change, with only some poor conversion in front of goal saving the visitors from yet another triple-figure loss. Brady Hough was impressive with 22 disposals and 14 marks and fellow backman Jayden Hunt had 27 touches and a goal.

From the coach[]

From the papers[]

The Sunday Times[]

"It took nearly 30 minutes for the Eagles to get a meaningful scoring opportunity as the Lions piled on the first seven goals of the game.

Jayden Hunt kicked their second moments later, but it would be their last goal until Oscar Allen converted a set shot in the third term.

West Coast were doing their best to try to control the footy out of defence, but when they got it wrong it was costly, gifting the Lions two easy goals in the second term with horrendous turnovers when kicking across goal.

Jeremy McGovern (20 disposals and nine marks) slotted comfortably back into the team for his first game in 14 weeks, partnering with Tom Barrass as they did their best in an under-siege defence before McGovern was subbed out at three-quarter time."[1]

Reserves[]

Round 13 (8 July)

West Coast stunned their Lathlain Park co-tenants Perth (known as Boorloo due to NAIDOC Week) to gain their first premiership points of 2023 with a surprising draw. The bottom-of-the-ladder Eagles, down by 32 at the main break and seemingly headed to another comfortable defeat, roared to life with a seven-goal third term, and held a one-point lead before a rushed behind after the siren robbed them of a remarkable upset victory. Zane Sumich went forward to kick three goals and Jed Kemp kicked two from 24 possesions.
