West Coast broke a 23-year MCG hoodoo against the Magpies and put themselves within percentage of top spot with a big win, but it came at a cost with Nic Naitanui injuring his 'good' knee. Naitanui took no part after half-time but his teammates rallied, taking control in the middle and kicking away to a 35-point victory. Jeremy McGovern was impassible in the backline with 12 marks and 22 possessions, and Jack Redden laid seven tackles to go along with 30 disposals.

From the coach[]

"We haven't had a lot of chance to breathe that in yet, but I was really, really pleased with our performance. Collingwood approached the game in a slightly different way than we'd planned for, so we got caught on theback foot a little bit and had to adapt, which I think our players did pretty well. Then we lost Nic at one stage and I thought some of our individuals stood up, with Scott and Hutch doing a really good job on Sidebottom. They showed a bit of resilience in the second half and put them to the sword. We probably should've kicked a few more goals in the end. Mind you, Collingwood missed their fair share as well. Really tough opponent, I couldn't be prouder than I am of our players at the moment.

"...(Kennedy, Darling and LeCras) are pretty dangerous players and in the absence of (Mason) Cox, it was an area that we could potentially expose. I think we were plus-six or seven in contested marks. But they contributed, they played their role just as much as the guys last week in that role. They've just got probably a slight advantage with a bit more talent. Waterman came in and played his role as well. We had four changes to the front half, which was always a bit of a risk, but in the end I think we managed a pretty decent score."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Collingwood led by a point at the main break and it should have been more, given they had 15 scoring shots to nine.

But the Eagles kicked 8.1 in the first half to keep pace with the Magpies.

It was West Coast’s turn to spray their shots in the third term, kicking a wasteful 4.7.

Collingwood could only manage 2.1 and the Eagles had a game-high lead of 22 points at three-quarter time."[2]

The Age[]

"In West Coast's defence Shannon Hurn and Jeremy McGovern were nigh on impenetrable, while in Naitanui’s absence, Scott Lycett held his own against Brodie Grundy.

Collingwood got the jump. Their superior early energy was typified by a fierce early tackle from 100-gamer Jack Crisp that stopped Naitanui in his tracks. The Magpies dominated possession and territory early, racing to a 20-point lead in little over 10 minutes, with a goal to Jordan De Goey and two for Josh Thomas.

The Eagles steadied though. Darling jagged a goal out the back while Kennedy took two contested marks, finishing off his work on both occasions. LeCras, the third of the returnees, missed everything but it was the only opportunity the Eagles would waste in the first half. Conversely the Pies kept shooting themselves in the foot. Brody Mihocek was particularly culpable as Collingwood kicked a wayward 6.9 to half-time."[3]

East Perth report[]

East Perth broke their losing streak, cruising to a win over Swan Districts at Bassendean Oval. The Royals led by 72 points at the final change before taking their foot off the pedal in the last term.
