West Coast recorded an important away win but failed to impress any onlookers after struggling to throw off a determined Blues side in an error-riddled display. The visitors led by as much as 33 late in the third quarter but a final-term fightback saw Carlton narrow the margin to single figures by the close of player. Jamie Cripps kicked three goals and Jeremy McGovern battled through a busted thumb to take eight marks in defence.

From the coach[]
"We are happy. We got a win. We probably thought we had a fair bit of play there for a while and didn’t capitalise with some shots on goal. If we kicked straight a bit early on it might not have been as tight in that last quarter, but to Carlton’s credit they never went away and they increased their attack in the last quarter and we didn’t really handle it well. We’ve got some learning to do, but we will take the win.
"That would probably be unfair on Carlton [to say we took our foot off the pedal]. I thought they probably rolled the dice a fair bit more and took the game on. In this game you’ve only got to get a bit of momentum and it doesn’t matter where or who you play, it’s hard to stop. We didn’t handle some situations structurally in the last quarter that we need to look at too.
"The way we won [was] not ideal, but we will take the win and it was good experience playing here again; the conditions, the size of the ground and just the experience. We get to come back here in a couple of weeks. I think we will reflect on the game and review it the way we need to, but we will move on pretty quick too."[1]
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"The Eagles were on top without kicking away from Carlton all afternoon in an error-strewn match played well below fifth-gear.
Carlton had the kicking yips while Eagles forward Jack Darling kicked 0.5.
West Coast had too many routes to goal to let Darling's dirty day cost them, with Jamie Cripps kicking three goals and Elliot Yeo, Josh Kennedy and Mark LeCras bagging two.
Luke Shuey impressed in midfield while Andrew Gaff and Matt Priddis were prominent in the bittersweet victory."[2]
The Age[]
"The Eagles threatened to make Carlton pay early in the second term, but their five straight inside 50s were fruitless. The Blues hadn't shown much to that point to suggest they would provide even nuisance value, but at long last they found some verve in the form of a daring Kade Simpson run. The veteran broke the lines, creating a chance for Silvagni, who this time took his chance. But it was a rare moment of spark for the Blues, and the Eagles - although a long way from their best - had enough answers."[3]
Herald-Sun[]
"To be perfectly frank the Eagles were a lot like the mostly ceremonial role Biden plays — they look just terrific but they don’t actually do much.
At times they feasted on Blues turnovers, punishing Kristian Jaksch’s kick straight to Andrew Gaff to kick quick bursts of goals.
But a team that would like to get back here for that one day in October is just coughing and spluttering along.
Jack Darling sprayed shots at goal all day, Josh Kennedy was well held by Sam Rowe but the class of Mark LeCras and Gaff got them home easily enough."[4]
East Perth report[]
Round 17 (16 July)
East Perth defeated arch-rivals West Perth by 13 points in atrocious conditions at Leederville Oval. The inaccurate Falcons controlled play for much of the first half, but the rain hit hard in the third quarter and the Royals made the best of the conditions, kicking five goals for the term to break the game open. Corey Adamson was East Perth's best with 33 hard-won possessions while Eric MacKenzie was a wall down back with 20 disposals and 6 marks, and ruckman Jonathan Giles kicked three goals.
Appearing for East Perth: Adamson, Allen, Bennell, Brophy, Duggan, Giles, Karpany, Lamb, MacKenzie, Mutimer, Nelson, Partington, Sheed, Tunbridge.
Reserves: Snadden.
