West Coast broke through to beat the Swans for the first time since 2007 and remain firmly in the hunt for a top-four spot. The Eagles strangled a depleted Sydney lineup in the first half, then survived a final-term fightback to steady and run out 52-point winners. Matt Priddis won the HMAS Sydney medal as best afield with 34 possessions, with Nic Naitanui giving his midfielders silver service throughout with 41 hitouts.

"Nothing has changed from what we said during the week. Obviously our goal now is to finish as high as we can. Wherever that takes us it takes us, we won the game today which we are happy about. We played a quality side, albeit one missing some players. We need to put that in consideration, but I thought that for the most part of the day we were getting the right numbers that we value, though in the first ten minutes of the last quarter there was some worry going on in the box.

"They are a quality side. They refused to give in and, as much as we were up, they felt like they still could win which is just a sign of them. The big thing for us today is that today is that we played a side which is mature and has been top four for a long time. We knew it was going to be difficult at stages. We don't know where we are at with the maturity side of things and big games. It was pleasing that we actually had some players stand up and I was happy with our midfield as well. Our spread with contested ball and clearances, the KPIs that help you get the game played in your half, we were pretty dominant at."

"The Swans tried to congest the game but West Coast used the tactics to lock the ball into their forward line.

Sydney managed only one goal in the first half and the Eagles booted eight. West Coast had 34 inside 50s in the first half compared to Sydney’s 15.

Matt Priddis and Andrew Gaff had the ball on a string and Brad Sheppard stepped into Jeremy McGovern’s role of marking the ball in defence.

Nic Naitanui dominated the ruck and his work with Luke Shuey gave the Swans headaches all day."
