In a game that failed to reach any real heights, a depleted West Coast side led at every change and survived a late charge from the Lions to record a two goal win. Luke Shuey had a massive first term, kicking 2 goals, and Xavier Ellis was a solid contributor in his 100th AFL game.

From the coach[]

"I wasn't happy at half-time, put it that way, and it started with our rucks. We play a tall side so we need to get an advantage in that area, and if we can't then we're vulnerable. They stood up, our rucks, in the second half, gave our mids first possession, fixed up the clearances and the contested ball came.

"He (Shuey) had a really good first quarter, but I'd like to know how many times he was on Zorko in that first quarter. It might have been tit-for-tat with that one. He kicked two goals and had 10 or 12 touches in that first quarter, but I reckon Zorko might have had 10 or 12 touches himself. They took it on, respect that, they tried that tact and it almost worked for them.

"I was pleased with the collective. McGovern stands up again late in games, we put him behind the ball and he finds a way to involve himself. Smith kicks a couple of important goals, Tunbridge comes on as the sub and does his role, young Wilson plays his role as well. Not to say they were game breakers, but they did their job."[1]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"Sloppy tackling and a lack of pressure from West Coast allowed their opponents far too much space through the middle and Brisbane could have been in front at the main break if not for some poor finishing.

A half-time spray from Simpson sparked the Eagles, with Mark LeCras and Ash Smith giving them a handy buffer going into the last quarter.

Lewis Taylor gave the Lions a sniff with the first goal of the fourth term, then after a series of misses it was Green who put them within five points of an upset victory.

However, Hutchings' goal at the 23-minute mark and some good work behind the ball from McGovern enabled the Eagles to eke out a scrappy win."[2]

Courier-Mail[]

"West Coast’s best chance of scoring continued to rest with their big men and in particular McGovern who was proving a handful for Darcy Gardiner.

He added another to his tally in the second quarter, again after a strong mark, and with Patrick McGinnity chipping in the Eagles held on to a six-point lead at the main break.

His move to defence late in the game when Brisbane were pressing had the desired effect, but it robbed the Eagles midfielders of a reliable target inside 50m.

West Coast discovered their pressure in the second half [and] it changed the tone of the game.

Brisbane’s run dried-up and they were forced into rushed handballs or to bomb the ball long by West Coast who must have eventually realised they remain a mathematical chance to make the finals."[3]
