West Coast lost their fifth straight Derby in a relatively poor overall display. Fremantle went into the game sitting bottom of the ladder but got an early lead by quarter time and held onto it as the Eagles wasted multiple chances in front of goal. Adam Selwood was West Coast's best with 28 possessions while youngster Tim Houlihan had 26 in a promising showing.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The ruck battle was very much a master-versus-apprentice challenge, with Sandilands, the Ross Glendinning Medallist, giving Nic Naitanui a solid lesson. If Naitanui keeps a diary, the entry for July 25, 2009, should fill a full page. It would detail the story of a boy in a man's body competing against a man-mountain.

Sandilands gave the 19-year-old a lesson. There's nothing unexpected about that because Sandilands, 26, is now the most dominant ruckman in the AFL competition.

The 211cm Docker was the most influential player on the ground, and Mark Seaby, Naitanui and Quinten Lynch couldn't negate his work.

In the ruck, in general play or up forward, Sandilands was the man the Eagles couldn't counter. It wasn't just his serial presence - he is as proficient at ground level as any big man."[1]

The Sunday Age[]

"Save for Josh Kennedy's wonderful mark and goal, another glimpse of his quality, the Dockers' speed on the rebound was consistently catching the Eagles shorthanded - until Solomon, not for the first time in his career, paid for his short temper.

A blatant hand into the back of Adam Selwood at a stoppage was bad enough, but after a push and shove ended with Solomon's hand shoving Matt Rosa in the face, the Dockers' 11-point lead had disappeared.

With Brett Peake back on the ground despite rolling an ankle, the game itself began to hobble with not one of the 44 players able to give the contest any direction - hence it going round in circles.

Just over 23 minutes was needed for any addition to the goals, with Mundy finding Ruffles who gave himself a moment to remember with a maiden AFL goal.

Matt Priddis' late reply reduced the margin to a single point at the final change, at least ensuring an enthralling fourth quarter, which started with Ashley Hansen hitting the post from point blank range, Andrew Embley missing another chance and then van Berlo and Ruffles ensuring Harvey's perfect record coaching in derbies continued."[2]
