From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"For two-and-a-half quarters, Eagles and Magpies kicked alternate goals. Then a burst of four in a row took West Coast out by 29 points. So Shaw improvised, putting the admirable Andrew Schauble into the ruck, Williams on to the ball, and leaving poor old Gavin Brown to play centre half-back on Jason Ball.

It worked; against the run of play, the Magpies kicked four of the next five goals, culminating in one from Anthony Rocca. It was the Magpies' first goal from a set forward for the match, and as it happened, their last from anyone.

Class would not be denied. The absence of Peter Matera and Dean Kemp from the Eagles' side was cancelled out by the loss of Nathan Buckley and, at the last minute, Mark Richardson for the Magpies.

But the Eagles covered better. Jarrad Schofield and Michael Braun made up with industry what they had lost from midfield in brilliance. The defence was a rock, Ashley McIntosh and Glen Jakovich ensuring that the Magpies hardly took a contested mark in the forward line."[1]
