From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Sydney paid dearly for many unforced errors, particularly across half-forward where the Eagles had a clear winner in Glen Jakovich.

Jakovich became an effective defender after Sydney was hit by two serious losses. Former Western Australian draft pair Gavin Rose and Andrew McGovern both received injuries that look certain to curtail their seasons.

Rose, who had started well at centre half-forward, hurt the cartilage in his left knee and McGovern has a suspected broken ankle.

Malthouse was forced into a team overhaul at quarter-time when West Coast trailed by eight points, bringing Peter Wilson and Karl Langdon."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles escaped injury free and while Malthouse was disappointed with some performances he did praise rover David Hart, pace wingman Peter Matera and defender Glen Jakovich.

Most of the 26,000 people at the ground believed Matera had set the tone of the match with two outstanding goals in the opening five minutes.

But they were the only two major scores for the Eagles in the first quarter and the fourth-placed team in the competition struggled to build a lead.

Hart produced an outstanding effort to tag elusive Sydney rover Jamie Lawson out of the contest and provided the Eagles with a decisive midfleld advantage."[2]
