From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Key defender Craig Kelly, Francis and Gavin Brown all battled manfully. But the Eagles, at their brilliant best with a record 30,400 crowd behind them, teamed superbly.

While team football was the outstanding feature in West Coast's eclipse of the reigning premier, 18-year-old rookie Glen Jakovich again stood out. With 10 strong marks and 26 effective disposals, the youngster gave further evidence of his enormous potential and displayed versatility in his game when he took over the ruck after an injury to Dean Irving.

Irving's knee injury and the report of Karl Langdon were the only downers for the Eagles."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"In front of a ground record crowd of 29,692, the Eagles struggled against the Magpies' defence before bursting to their best after the half-time break.

Collingwood based its game on curtailing the Eagles' goalkicking potential in the forward-line and the AFL frontrunners struggled under the pressure.

Full-back Ron McKeown kept Peter Sumich goalless in the first half, while Kelly was arguably the most influential Magpie with his work at centre half-back.

Kelly shut down the Eagles' access to attack with Michael Brennan, Ashley McIntosh and Karl Langdon finding the strongly-built Magpie difficult to evade."[2]
