West Coast moved towards a finals berth and put a damper on the Blues' own finals hopes with a 31 point win at Princes Park. Craig Turley kicked two goals from 25 touches and Craig McGrath bobbed up in the absence of some bigger name teammates to kick three goals.

From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"The Blues were fragile, not interested in the physical stuff and played an almost totally attacking game. The Eagles gained many easy possessions around the ground because of the simple fact that the Blues would not pick up their opponents when the Eagles gained possession.

Lamb, Malaxos, Hart, Worsfold and McKenna all had jobs to do on their opponents but they ran off very easily to get possessions. If you add players like Lewis, Turley, Mainwaring and Kemp to this list, it means that the Eagles quickly launched attacks and took many shots at goal.

The most impressive feature of the win was that they never let the Blues off the hook. Miles, McKenna and Brennan led a disciplined backline; Mainwaring, Lamb and Kemp had a great battle with Glascott, Bradley and Hanna and eventually came out on top; and their forwards to a man tackled and chased well."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"The Eagles' result was even more impressive considering they were without key forwards Peter Sumich, Karl Langdon and Brett Heady. But the Eagles merely looked for, and found more options in attack, with 11 players contributing to their tally of 20 goals.

Craig Turley, Peter Wilson and captain Steve Malaxos collected many possessions around midfield, while Dwayne Lamb not only nullified Carlton's Craig Bradley, but also provided drive himself.

Carlton had little in attack apart from Wayne Johnston and relied on David Kernahan, Milham Hanna and Tom Alvin in defence."[2]
