Footscray players appeared distracted by merger talk surrounding the club and West Coast took full advantage, moving off the bottom of the ladder with a 37-point win. Chris Lewis cut the Bulldogs apart with 32 possessions, and Geoff Miles picked up 25 while sneaking forward for two goals.

The Age[]
"This miserable game had only three redeeming features. The first was the majesty of Chris Lewis who, left to his own devices, wrought havoc early to set the pattern of the contest; the second was Guy McKenna, whose calm and faultless game on the back flank prompted Malthouse to label him the best back flanker in the business and to "tag" him with Steven Wallis.
And the third feature was the overtly physical, but highly entertaining, clash between Peter Foster and Murray Rance that ended with the former teammates shaking hands, and Foster winning the struggle on points.
Games at the Western Oval are supposed to be tight, tough affairs in which earning a kick is an achievement in itself. But West Coast, the competition's bottom side before yesterday, played the sort of loose, offensive football that it favours on its home turf. The amazing part was that it was allowed to get away with it."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"The Perth side used the wind effectively to set up a 24-point lead at quarter time with forwards Peter Sumich and Stevan Jackson kicking two goals each.
It was only two goals by Foster in time-on that gave the home side's score some respectability. Footscray then failed to use the blustery conditions to it's advantage in the second term and trailed by four goals at half time.
The Eagles kicked eight majors to six after the main break, due to some outstanding work by half-backs Guy McKenna and Geoff Miles. So easy was their job of minding Footscray forwards that Miles had time to run upfield and kick two majors in the second half."[2]
