West Coast showed much-improved fight and effort but still couldn't avoid a 13th-straight defeat, going down to St Kilda at home to remain firmly at the bottom of the ladder. After a week of soul-searching following the biggest loss in club history, the home side, essentially down to their last 23 fit players after the pre-game withdrawal of Tim Kelly and Luke Edwards to illness, suffocated St Kilda with intense pressure and threatened to cause a massive boilover as they led by four goals at halftime. The Saints were able to work their way back with a big third term, and pinched the win with the only goal of the final term. Skipper Luke Shuey had 28 disposals and nine tackles while Liam Duggan picked up 27 touches in his 150th game.

Quarter by quarter[]

The already-deciminated West Coast was forced into late changes with both Tim Kelly and Luke Edwards ill, replaced by Xavier O'Neill and Ryan Maric, with ruckman Harry Barnett making his debut as the sub. St Kilda named Cooper Sharman as their sub. The match was played in fine and clear conditions.

From the coach[]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The roar at quarter time told the story. West Coast led at the first change and the crowd reacted like they'd won the game. They had every reason to be excited given the Eagles hadn't won a single quarter since round nine.

But West Coast made other changes too. They reverted to a kick-mark game and retained possession to move the ball down the field. They've averaged 82 marks per game this year.

They took 64 in the first half. Tom Barrass was taking intercept marks.

Shannon Hurn was providing leadership, Luke Shuey was at his clearance winning best and Jamie Cripps kept laying tackles.

West Coast led by 31 points during the second quarter and the kids were having a day to remember."[1]

The Age[]

"Alarm bells were blaring for the Saints in the second term as the lead ballooned to 31 points.

West Coast’s tackling and precise ball movement proved too much for the shellshocked Saints to handle, but a late goal to Anthony Caminiti after a mark on the goal line gave the visitors something to build from.

St Kilda dominated the third quarter with six goals to three to close the gap to just one point at the final change.

It set up an enthralling finish, and Owens sealed the only goal of a hard-fought final quarter to lift St Kilda over the line."[2]

Reserves[]

Round 12 (1 July)

West Coast's reserves were handed another monumental thrashing, this time at the hands of East Fremantle at the WACA, with the Sharks bringing up a double-century at the home of cricket and finishing 184 points ahead of their hapless opponents.
