West Coast's poor run at Subiaco continued with a 32-point loss to Port Adelaide that pushed them out of the top eight. After the visiting Power stunned the Eagles with the first four goals, West Coast clicked into gear and booted the next seven to open up a sizeable gap. But Port were able to fight their way back into the contest and level the scores by the final break, before kicking away with eight goals in the final term to leave the Eagles with plenty of questions. Jack Darling and the returning Mark LeCras each kicked four goals.

From the coach[]

"It was a disappointing start, conceding the first four goals. From the five minute mark until five minutes before half time we played the way we wanted to play with good supply, good pressure on the game. I think we had field position covered. The last five minutes before half time was not as predictable as we would have liked and it probably opened the door slightly. Our inability to sustain what we did in that first half was evident in the second half. Just looking up some of the stats it was 14 inside 50s to 37, contested possessions minus 13, clearances minus 8, forward-half turnovers 4 to 16 our way. We didn't sustain what we wanted. We knew Port were going to turn up and play that way, they have been playing that way all year. Last time we played them we found a way to get over the line, but just through weight of numbers in all areas we weren't good enough in the second half and until we can do it for four quarters we are going to look inconsistent.

"...Our second halves, we put a lot of energy and effort into the first half without true reward. But that is footy. You have got to be able to do it all the time. Our players know that and they take accountability for it. The positive is that our best is good enough, but the thing we really need to work on is how we do it for four quarters and until we do that we won't play finals.

"...I'm not sure if it was hunger, it was our ability to sustain it. Port just sustained it for four quarters and we didn't. It wouldn't be down to intent. It looked like in the last 10 minutes that we just rolled over. We tried a couple of things, a couple of Hail Marys to get back into the game. They clearly didn't work. The third quarter and the start of the last were really disappointing."

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"LeCras and Jack Darling had earlier threatened to fire West Coast to successive wins in finishing with four goals apiece as the Eagles booted seven unanswered majors from midway through the first quarter.

LeCras had not scored a goal since the club’s round seven win over the Power in Adelaide, but the 30-year-old was an influential player in his return from three weeks on the sidelines with a hip complaint.

The 2010 All-Australian kicked two of his goals in the first quarter after Port had piled on the game’s first four majors to leave the home crowd stunned early.

Darling led the turnaround after snapping West Coast’s first goal from a strong contested mark."[1]

The Age[]

"Visitors Port pushed forward to take advantage of McGovern's move, but he, Tom Barrass, Shannon Hurn and Brad Sheppad took turns in taking intercept marks and rebounding for the Eagles.

The result was West Coast kicking 7.6 before the Power added another. They managed to pinch a four-point lead by quarter-time and extended that to 11 by the main break.

West Coast's forward line, who've been under the pump at different stages this season, managed to lift and get their side back into the contest.

Mark LeCras hadn't kicked a goal since he booted four in the Eagles 10-point win over Port in round seven. He's missed three games due to injury since then, and gone four without contributing on the scoreboard. But he's kicked 45 goals or more in a season four times so he knows how to play and he looked the closest he has been to his best in a long time when he had three goals to his name by half-time."[2]
