West Coast overcame terrible goalkicking and some suspect umpiring decisions to beat Collingwood, breaking a 12-year drought against the Pies in Melbourne. The win came at a cost with important defender Jeremy McGovern suffering a hamstring injury during the third term. In his 100th appearance, Andrew Gaff continued his great form with 34 possessions, and Mark LeCras kicked three goals from his 23 touches.

From the coach[]
"We had so many things working well for us and we just could not convert. It's happened a few times this year for us and it's just become a habit. It's hard to change the game thinking the scoreboard pressure is there when a lot of things were going right but we just couldn't convert. But I suppose we did what we needed to do. We didn't change too much about the way we played and we just converted a little bit better in the last quarter. It took a while.
"...I think it's cost us games before - last year, luckily not this year. But they're the type of things that do cost you games, especially against good sides. They make you pay. In the first half, I don't know what the inside 50s were but their efficiency going forward was really high, which sometimes happens when you dominate inside 50s. It was a big concern. I don't know how to fix it, though, during a game.
"We were really pleased, really proud of our players. I thought it was a big ask, big challenge to come over here and play against a team who's just as desperate as we are, fighting for similar spots in the eight. To grind it out and pretty much play our way the whole day I thought in the end was pretty satisfying."
From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"West Coast were on top early and had twice as many forward 50m entries in the first half (30-15), but couldn’t convert that dominance into a sizeable lead.
They had chances to kick clear late in the second term, with Chris Masten, Andrew Gaff, Dom Sheed and Josh Kennedy all missing goals they could easily have kicked.
It meant they went into the half-time break with a narrow four-point lead, which was extended to seven points by the final change.
Both sides had their chances in the last quarter, but it was the Eagles who ran the game out stronger."[2]
The Age[]
"To be honest, even 31 points might not have been reflective of West Coast's advantage in general play. But if nothing else, the fact the Eagles survived their own blunders and still came out comfortably on top gives some indication of the growth of Simpson's outfit in only 12 months.
Despite the largesse given the opponent on the scoreboard, West Coast's forwards at least won the ball well. LeCras was the cool hand at the death, set up opportunities for others and still finished equal leading goalkicker.
Cripps continues to grow in stature as a medium-sized forward, and like LeCras, gave away as many as he kicked. Matt Priddis did as Priddis does and Andrew Gaff likewise.
And in the end it was mission accomplished. Not efficiently. Not with a great deal to spare. And with McGovern injured, not without some headaches about how the next few weeks are going to unfold given the Eagles play Sydney, Hawthorn and Fremantle over the next month."[3]
East Perth report[]
