From the coach[]

"Yeah, I think the effort was there. I thought it was there all day. But there is a difference between effort and work-rate. When there is a one-on-one contest, we are pleased with how we are competing. But I think the work rate of Sydney across the ground, getting the extra number there after the contest wore away at us and in the end we weren't good enough.

"...The game is full of critical moments. You could point your finger at a number of people. There was a stoppage goal in our back 50 that got them back in front by 13 points that we could have prevented. Two weeks in a row we have played two teams who probably may play for the premiership and we have challenged them at stages, and good teams respond and both the teams have done it in the past two weeks. They have both pulled away.

"...There are opportunities where we can go to the next level and we are not quite doing that at the moment. We are competing well and our effort has been there. For the last month in particular we have turned up to play and thrown the kitchen sink at sides and just haven't been good enough. There are areas of our game and personnel we have got to look at, no doubt."[1]

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Sydney should have been more than 13 points in front at half-time if it had better converted its chances in front of goal.

The Swans added 2.8 for the term, Ben McGlynn kicking three behinds for the quarter, with another of his shots on goal forced through by the Eagles defenders.

The Eagles then wasted a couple of chances to draw closer at the start of the third term and when Adam Goodes kicked the first goal of the second half (the second of his three) 12 minutes into the quarter, the Swans were 18 points up.

Instead of sparking Sydney, the man who has now played more AFL games than any other indigenous player (341), set the Eagles alight and they controlled the rest of the term."[2]

PerthNow[]

"The Eagles continued to persist and controlled field position for much of the third stanza, finally getting some reward when Lycett landed a set shot bomb from 55m entering time-on.

The Coasters were within a goal when Luke Shuey snapped truly shortly after, but a reply from McGlynn meant the visitors had preserved their two-goal buffer at the final change.

West Coast was able to add only 2.2 from 17 forward entries in the third quarter, and was left to lament its inability to convert when Parker capped his hardworking game with his second goal early in the last quarter.

Sydney kicked three goals to one in the last quarter."[3]

East Perth report[]

East Perth stayed in touch with VFL side Williamstown for most of the match, but a late flurry of goals to the Seagulls saw them run out winners 10.11.71 to 7.5.47. Josh Hill kicked 3 goals but the Eagles' participants were generally quiet.

Appearing for East Perth: Carter, Colledge, Cripps, Hill, Karpany, Main, McInnes

Round 15 (Sat, 5 July)

East Perth blew away Peel in the second half to run out comfortable winners, 16.13.109 to 6.10.46. Dom Sheed and Brant Colledge had plenty of the ball during the rout.
