Sydney handed West Coast their first loss at Subiaco in over a year and continued their winning streak over the Eagles with a comprehensive win. West Coast kicked the first three goals but Sydney took control thereafter, extending their lead at every break to run out 52 point winners. Despite the result West Coast's midfield toiled hard, with Daniel Kerr racking up possessions and Chris Masten adding 3 goals.

From the coach[]

"Certainly it appeared that (they monstered us), especially in the second half. Their ability to get good use out of possessions that were won in the contest were better than ours today, for sure.

"Obviously there were times today when we had three defenders playing in our forward line trying to hold up for us. Losing Hams really meant this week those guys haven't really played together. I thought they did a pretty good job just working hard when the ball got in there, but we were shuffling players around trying to get a team out there today. But we will get players back. We will get Lynch back straight away and hopefully we will get Hill and Hams back this week.

"...It was a pretty tough (ruck) contest. There were a lot of numbers around every stoppage, so hard to read too much into it. I think their two rucks are pretty big boys and I thought they battled on pretty well."[2]

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The exclamation point for Sydney's dominance through the midfield came with the work of ruckmen Shane Mumford and Mike Pyke, who were not overawed in tackling the league's best combination in Dean Cox and Nic Naitanui.

The big Swans bodied Naitanui out of contests, allowing their midfield at least a 50-50 shot at winning the ball. And, with odds like that, you'd probably back Sydney every time in the contests.

If supporting evidence was needed to support the claim that Sydney's midfield is as good as any, then that proof was delivered in spades yesterday.

Andrew Gaff was solid for West Coast and Kerr collected plenty of possessions, but they failed to match the strength on the inside provided by Sydney."[3]

The Age[]

"West Coast, minus the likes of Quinten Lynch, Luke Shuey, Josh Hill, Josh Kennedy, Andrew Embley, Mark Nicoski, Mark LeCras and Beau Waters, stormed out of the blocks with the opening three goals of the match.

But the Swans soon woke from their slumber, kicking eight of the next nine goals to open up a 23-point lead midway through the second term.

West Coast fought back to reduce the margin to one point, but late goals to Mike Pyke and Jude Bolton gave the Swans a 15-point edge at the long break.

And from there it was one-way traffic, with O'Keefe the star of the show as Sydney put West Coast to the sword."[4]

PerthNow[]

"O'Keefe ran amok for the Swans in the third, racking up 17 disposals for the quarter, while Jetta added a third to push the lead out to five goals.

West Coast's day was best summed up by a Nic Naitanui chance at goal, where the ball refused to bounce truly for the ruckman as he burned off his opponent to prevent what should have been an open goal.

Facing a 30-point deficit at the final change, the Eagles had a glimmer of hope when Masten playing as an unlikely full-forward marked and goalled early in the fourth term.

But the heroics of last week's comeback win over North Melbourne would not be repeated, with goals to Bolton and Josh Kennedy sealing the deal for the visitors."[5]
