West Coast piled on nine unanswered goals either side of quarter time to open up a commanding 40-point lead. Geelong fought back, getting within a couple of goals several times but the Eagles were able to hold off the charge and take the points. Andrew Embley impressed with 32 touches and a goal.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"Part of West Coast's midnight oil was spent on ways of attaching a leash on Matthew Scarlett. It worked. The playmaking defender was kept busy on Brad Ebert, who was given a defensive role in attack, and the Cat then had to stand Naitanui or Cox when the Eagles' ruckmen went forward.
The Eagles' unrelenting first-half pressure produced some uncharacteristic Geelong blunders, especially in defence, while the Eagles midfield, led by Matthew Priddis and Andrew Embley drove the momentum of the home side.
After leading by 35 points at half-time, West Coast needed to withstand a withering assault by the Cats in the first 10 minutes of the third term, and also another assault in the last when Geelong was pushing hard."[2]
