West Coast avoided equaling their worst-ever losing streak thanks mainly to an exceptional effort from Mark LeCras, who set a Docklands record with 12 goals. LeCras overcame a head gash and numerous Essendon opponents to put the Eagles up by 37 points heading into time-on in the third term, his ten goals to that point ahead of the Dons' combined total of nine. The Bombers fought back in the final quarter but West Coast steadied to take the win. Apart from LeCras, Matt Priddis had 32 possessions and mature rookie Ashton Hams kicked 3 goals.

From the papers[]
The West Australian[]
"It was a vastly improved performance from Eagles both young and experienced.
Senior players such as Adam Selwood, Andrew Embley and Dean Cox conjured some of their best form of the year, while Brad Ebert, Chris Masten, Scott Selwood, Nic Naitanui and Ash Smith gave coach John Worsfold a real glimpse of the future in which he has kept faith for the entire year.
Essendon defender Cale Hooker again hit the highlight reels for all the wrong reasons when he followed his almost comical chase of Hawthorn's Lance Franklin in round 13 by masquerading as a stepladder for a Josh Kennedy screamer late in the third term."[1]
The Age[]
"When he kicked his 10th, a beautiful kick from 50 metres, he had kicked more than Essendon had posted (nine), and no Bomber kicked more than one.
LeCras kicked his 11th when he pounced on another Essendon error, had two handballs in a passage and snapped truly and made it a dozen with another great set shot.
Remarkably, he scoffed his easiest chance of the night, when he fumbled in the goalsquare in the second quarter and threw out a boot, but the kick went through for a behind.
Essendon were powerless to stop LeCras, as they tried six players on him throughout the game, starting with Heath Hocking, who had conceded six goals by 20 minutes into the second term."[2]
Herald-Sun[]
"Essendon were swept aside by a hungry and desperate West Coast outfit, who won by 32 points on the back of Mark LeCras' record-breaking 12-goal haul.
The Eagles kicked six straight goals from the 18-minute mark of first quarter to the 13-minute mark of the second term to kill the contest.
It is just the third time West Coast has won interstate since the departures of Chris Judd and Ben Cousins.
So devastating was the loss and the lifeless performance against the raging wooden spoon favourites, Knights admitted Essendon's season was effectively a write-off."[3]
