From the papers[]

The Sunday Age[]

"It was as good as over by quarter-time. The Eagles had scored 5.1 with the chilly Waverley breeze behind them by the time an errant left-foot snap from Glen Coghlan had registered St Kilda's first behind. One of the reigning premier's best starts of the season provided a 37-point buffer at the first break that was never going to be overhauled.

While the Saints were without late withdrawal Lazar Vidovic and were forced to use Bailey, a gallant David Sierakowski and a horribly out-of-sorts Stewart Loewe in the ruck against Turnbull, the Eagles' spine of Mitchell White, Jakovich, Chris Lewis, Ball and Ashley McIntosh was supreme.

White, at full-back, outplayed Loewe and Wakelin in turn, even dashing upfield to take a shot for goal in the third term. Having missed a berth in last year's premiership team he has, according to coach Mick Malthouse, the "hunger".

Jakovich had five opponents at centre half-back before the end of the third quarter, but that figure was more a reflection of St Kilda's size deficiency, and the key-position juggling it necessitated, than any dominant display from the champion Eagle."[1]
