From the papers[]

The Age[]

"West Coast's highly acclaimed wingmen, Peter Matera and Chris Mainwaring, were again dominant forces yesterday. Matera outclassed his opponent, Paul Hills, and Mainwaring eclipsed Darren Bewick before Sheedy swung Damian Hardwick from half-forward to a wing.

Joe Misiti had an interesting duel in the middle with Dean Kemp; James Hird tried hard at both ends of the ground, and the Daniher brothers, Chris (Brett Heady) and Anthony (Peter Sumich) had the better of their opponents. Apart from them, Essendon was soundly beaten all over the ground.

Conscious of the potential danger of West Coast centre half-back Glen Jakovich, Sheedy started the game using Stephen Alessio as his main striker at centre half-forward, with Hird taking Jakovich wide. When Hird was forced to move to centre half-back to oppose Ashley McIntosh late in the first term, Glenn Manton tried the same ploy by playing deep in a forward pocket.

Despite those tactics, Jakovich, new defensive find Jason Ball, improving ruckman Ryan Turnbull, and the weather halted any influence Paul Salmon and his fellow tall players might have had on the game."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Despite the bad state of Subiaco Oval because of rain and overuse, Eagles midfielders Peter Matera and Chris Mainwaring were able to dictate the contest.

Matera's natural pace should have been affected by the chopped surface, but the 1992 Norm Smith medallist was outstanding as he collected more than 30 possessions on his wing.

But it was the performance of inexperienced big men Ryan Turnbull and Jason Ball that would have most pleased the West Coast.

Turnbull won his battle against the Bombers' Paul Salmon, and Ball successfully shadowed Stephen Alessio, restricting him to one goal."[2]
