From the papers[]

The Age[]

"West Coast was never allowed to settle after a typically busy opening in which it booted five goals to three. Sumich managed two in the first term, but was held goalless until another two in the final stanza. David Hynes took a swag of marks across half-forward but was generally prevented from turning them into goals.

Brett Heady was ineffectual. Chris Mainwaring flashed in and out of play. Peter Matera was fleetingly brilliant, but more often frustrated by either Paul Hills or the umpires. Don Pyke won 25 possessions, usually in the defensive half. His man, Darren Bewick, won fewer kicks but was far more dangerous around the ground."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Salmon had played below his best and had not kicked a goal for the Bombers all day when he was awarded a free 45m out with less than a minute to play.

Essendon had been in real trouble as the Eagles built a 14-point lead at the first change.

They fought back to grab a 13 point lead with a quarter to play, appearing to have control even though inaccurate goal kicking was haunting them.

The Eagles snared three goals early in the final quarter to lead by two-points and held that narrow break until Salmon's goal."[2]
