From the papers[]

The Age[]

"Melbourne surprised West Coast with its ferocious tackling and endeavour early in the game. By half-time, the Demons held a one-point advantage and appeared to have enough ammunition in store to blast clear of the Eagles in the second half. But it was not to be.

The Eagles regained their composure and broke clear in the third term, although their buffer was never a decisive one.

A total of 76 free kicks - an extraordinary amount - were awarded throughout the night, most of which left both players and supporters stratching their heads in bewilderment.

In a spiteful first half, West Coast ruckman Paul Harding was felled by Melbourne defender Andy Goodwin, and was carried from the field on a stretcher. But he returned after half-time."[1]
