West Coast overcame some patchy form to upset the league-leading Carlton and keep their maiden finals chances alive. In a spiteful encounter in which four Blues were reported along with Eagles wingman Phil Narkle, the home side leapt out of the blocks before being forced to regain the lead after Carlton took control of the match in the second half. Ross Glendinning was inspirational with four goals and Chris Lewis had a big game with 27 possessions.
(Note: Rounds 16 and 17 were split over three weeks. This game was officially recorded as Round 17 despite being the first game played in the three-week period)

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"West Coast set up its win with a ferocious opening onslaught that saw it lead by 33 points at the end of the first quarter. Obviously the local team had benefited from being on the receiving end last week at the hands of Essendon.
Glendinning was prominent in that opening burst, as were ruckman Laurie Keene and rover David Hart. West Coast scored three goals two before Carlton managed a rushed point and, despite losing momentum with missed chances, came back with the last two goals for the term.
Carlton gradually got back into the match, largely through the efforts of former East Fremantle player Richard Dennis, who had a brilliant second quarter. When he kicked Carlton's fifth goal the Blues trailed by only 14 points. Michael O'Connell stopped the run with a goal after a beautiful mark running with the flight of the ball, but Warren mcKenzie made the difference eight points at half-time."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Glendinning, restricted by a leg injury, inspired his side with a great mark and goal to open the final term and retake the lead.
The lead changed three times and scores were level as many times as both sides threw everything into the final term.
Rhys-Jones, shifted to full forward, kept his side in the match and looked like stealing the game with his third goal of the term at the 22-minute mark to give the Blues a three-point lead.
The 23,000 hometown supporters moaned when Narkle then Dean Laidley missed easy shots at goal before Glendinning put them back in front at the 29-minute mark."[2]
