West Coast won a thriller over Hawthorn to firm up their top-four spot, opening up a handy lead by half-time but letting the Hawks back in with a poor third quarter at a wet MCG. From there the two sides traded heavyweight blows before a late goal by Jamie Cripps gave the Eagles a six-point buffer that they were able to hang onto in the dying stages. Jack Darling kicked three first-quarter goals and finished with five, while Luke Shuey had 15 of his 39 possessions during the critical last quarter.

"It was a bit of a struggle all day really. It was a game where we knew with the conditions that both teams were going to do slightly different things from a strategic point of view – you just can’t do too much. Field position was really important all day for both sides. We had a poor third quarter and they had a really good third quarter. Their mids got on top and we couldn’t get it out of our back half. We did a couple of little things here and there, but I thought we just stood up in the last quarter. Our good players played well and we just happened to be in front at the right time.
"I think the collective of our mids... they lowered their colours throughout most parts of the day and we challenged them at three-quarter time and they responded. With Nic back in the side as well, I thought he started pretty well with a good first hitout. He’s injury free at this stage, (on) limited minutes, but we thought that collective was always going to take a bit of time to gel, but the last quarter I thought they stood up.
"...It was one of those games that we could have lost very easily. Relief was the feeling that I had when we won. We went into a couple of things that we hadn’t trained too much this year with the new rules and trying to set up defensively with the new 6-6-6 rule, we haven’t had too many games that have been that tight where we’ve had to go into certain plays. We’ve had a couple; we got to work on a couple of things there, which will be worth reviewing."[2]

"The Eagles were a player down in the second half after Mark Hutchings injured a hamstring and his exit coincided with a Hawks resurgence.
James Worpel was instrumental with 11 disposals and a goal in a third quarter during which Hawthorn had twice as many inside 50s as the visitors.
Debutant Oliver Hanrahan gave the Hawks the lead with his first AFL goal, his side up by five points heading into the final term.
West Coast snatched back the lead with the first two goals, but Ricky Henderson and Daniel Howe answered before Adam Simpson’s men willed themselves to a famous win."[3]

In the first half the game had followed that path that everyone predicted with the Eagles' forwards proving too dangerous both on the ground and in the air with Liam Ryan superb at ground level and Darling providing a reliable avenue to goal.
