In an intense Derby, West Coast held pace with the Dockers throughout but were stymied by their inability to translate their dominant periods into a scoreboard advantage. The Eagles kicked a woeful 1.10 in the second and third quarters to allow Fremantle to take control of the match, and an enthralling final term saw West Coast hit the front momentarily before a Fremantle spurt of goals but the match beyond the Eagles reach. Souring the solid effort, Mitch Brown was stretchered off in the third term with a what looked to be a serious knee injury. Mark LeCras had 22 possessions and two goals from the midfield and Eric MacKenzie kept Dockers' skipper Matthew Pavlich quiet.

From the papers[]

The West Australian[]

"The Eagles were showing they were up from the contest as Jack Darling athletically soccered another one out of the air from the goal square to give them two in a row.

But from there, the Dockers started to dig in making it goal for goal, including Colin Sylvia’s first major for the club, with a five-point margin in favour of the Eagles at the first break.

West Coast continued to press hard early in the second quarter but inaccuracy cost them with McGovern, Luke Shuey and Andrew Gaff all missing opportunities.

Fremantle then got it up the other end and made them pay with goals to Ballantyne and Hill to put them in front for the first time."[1]

The Age[]

"Brown had kept Hayden Ballantyne to six touches and just one goal to that point.

However, as Brown went to ground holding his right knee, Ballantyne ran into an open goal to put the Dockers in front.

And the momentum clearly changed in favour of Fremantle.

When the Eagles challenged in the final term and took the lead, Stephen Hill’s third goal was the first of four in eight minutes for the Dockers."[2]

PerthNow[]

"But the Dockers’ four-goal lead at the final change evaporated in the space of 14 minutes.

Fifth-gamer McGovern started the resurgence with his second, before Xavier Ellis snapped a goal as the game roared back to life.

A roll call of unlikely heroes rose to drive West Coast’s thrilling comeback, with goals to Pat McGinnity and Mark Hutchings making it four straight majors as the Eagles led by a point.

There was little left in the tank though and the desperate situation called for the cream to rise to the top.

Enter Hill, who sealed his medal with a crucial intercept mark and goal, his third for the game, at the 17-minute mark."[3]

East Perth report[]

The Royals had the bye.
