West Coast returned to the winner's list with an error-riddled win over the lowly Lions in wet and slippery conditions at the Gabba, a five-goal final term proving the difference. Dean Kemp picked up 28 possessions and Peter Matera had 26 touches and a goal.

From the papers[]
The Age[]
"This was a dour struggle, with tough defenders in their element. It was paid on a drizzling, humid night on a slick Gabba surface with the umpires at their technical worst.
And in the end it was Mick Malthouse's mobile, mean, mauling backmen - with a lot of help from the ever-busy Peter Matera - who ground Roger Merrett's Lions out of a low-scoring slug.
Guy McKenna, Ashley McIntosh, Danny Metropolis, John Worsfold, when he was off the interchange, and Chris Waterman were too experienced and too tough. Waterman, in his 10th AFL season, used all his bullocking skills on Justin Leppitsch, Craig McRae and Daniel Bradshaw - the forward Merrett obviously views as a new spearhead for his resurgent Lions."[1]
