West Coast recorded a big win over the Bombers on the back of a monster effort by Peter Sumich, who took 13 marks and could have had more than his 11 goals with some better conversion. Peter Matera added three goals from 23 disposals and Chris Waterman had 25 touches.

From the papers[]

The Age[]

"With Chris Lewis and Peter Matera gathering and distributing brilliantly from midfield, Chris Mainwaring trying a new role as rover, and Dean Kemp, Craig Turley and Scott Watters giving Malthouse plenty of options, the most skilful on-ball combination of last season is returning to its best.

A bonus was the performance of David Hynes at centre half-forward, a troublespot for West Coast in past years. He was particularly prominent in the second quarter when the Eagles kicked eight goals and effectively ended the contest.

Sumich had his first six goals by then, and the only remaining interest remained how many he would kick. But rather than play out time, the Eagles stuck well to their task, slogging out a game that in perfect conditions had promised better things.

They may not have been the league's best defence, but the Eagles have a basic defensive instinct. Everyone tackles, everyone chases, and they seldom give away easy kicks. Yesterday the harassment came early, and so did the opposition's white flag."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Essendon ruined a promising mid season run of going into the match with four consecutive wins.

Full-forward Paul Salmon had a dismal day after a nine-goal bag against Adelaide last week and finished with only five kicks for the day.

West Coast received great drive from its on-ball division, especially Peter Matera and Dean Kemp, who have enjoyed excellent seasons.

Forward Chris Lewis continued his return to form and was a handy contributor across the half-forward flank."[2]
