From the papers[]

The Age[]

"If the Eagles are not listening to instructions of that sort, they must not be listening to anything Todd says. Their performance was so undisciplined it was not worthy of a VFA reserves team - no disrespect to the VFA intended.

Watson tore the Eagle to shreds in the first half, while Darren Bewick, in his first game back after injury, played an inspired first quarter, kicking three goals in the opening term and two for the rest of the match.

Perhaps the most impressive aspect was that both players were slightly less damaging in the second half, and that the Bombers increased the 72-point lead they had at half-time. They played, in Todd's words, like a machine.

The only potential threat to Essendon's dominance, Chris Mainwaring, was well smothered by Dean Bailey, while others such as Michael Long and Bradley Plain rose to the occasion with some fantastic play."[1]

Canberra Times[]

"Essendon dominated from the first bounce and had winners in every position as it gave the Eagles their second thrashing in as many weeks.

An eight-goal first quarter established the pattern with Darren Bewick kicking three for the quarter.

The instigator, however, was captain Tim Watson who inspired his team with a brilliant display in the centre.

Watson was unmarked in the first term and was everywhere, cutting the Eagles' defence to shreds with pinpoint passing."[2]
