From the papers[]
The Age[]
"The Eagles gambled heavily going into the match with two players (Ross Glendinning and Steve Malaxos) returning after long injuries; two others (Murray Wrensted and Mark Zanotti) struggling for form and two rookies (Brent Hutton and David O'Connell) on trial.
Glendinning survived the game on his proppy legs, kicking just two goals. But he was delighted at getting through, as was Malaxos, whose ball-getting in the packs was a feature early in the game.
Wrensted's effort was the most impressive. He was allowed to return to his favourite position in the centre where he picked up 16 kicks and 13 handballs."[1]
Canberra Times[]
"Geelong jumped the Eagles in the first half with the aid of a dominant midfield led by wingman Paul Couch and Bairstow, and a more consistent forward line.
The Eagles wasted easy scoring opportunities within 30-40 metres of goal and only remained in touch with Geelong with the aid of hard workers Chris Mainwaring, John Worsfold and Adrian Barich.
Though full forward Ross Glendinning battled hard all day, he was well held by the Geelong defence and finished with only two goals.
Fortunately, the Eagles' smaller men provided other avenues into goals and vice captain John Annear finished as the leading goal scorer with four, while Mainwaring and David Hart booted three apiece."[2]
